However, there are other ways chemicals could be getting into the water and that is what DNR and IDEM are trying to figure out.Ĭontamination could have big effects on both the reservoir and those who fish in it. The Geist Reservoir Coalition treats the area for algae a few times a year, but the chemicals used are cleared by the Indiana Department of Environmental management. “I am not a biologist but it sure looks chemical related.” “Big mature ones that are several years old, for them just to die like that and have the fungus growing on them like what is growing on them, there is something going on,” says Briere. He says it is not so much the number of fish that turned up dead in this years kill that is concerning, but rather the types of fish. “And it is just odd.”īriere has been fishing on Geist Reservoir for more than 20 years. “The fish that you are seeing now have big red splotches on them and a lot of times those red splotches start getting that fungus you know, growing around them,” Briere said. It is still early in the season for recreational fishers to be out on the water but it is not unusual to have fish turn up dead when the weather starts to warm up.įor people like William Briere, who have been out on the water training since March, they are noticing something different in the fish. Citizens Energy Group, which took over ownership of the reservoir in 2011, made plans in 2019 to transform the now vacant quarry into the Citizens Reservoir to serve as supplemental storage of 3 billion gallons of water for Geist Reservoir.INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is looking into what some fisherman are calling an abnormal-looking fishkill on Geist Reservoir. IMI had been mining the quarry in this area for limestone, sand, and gravel since the 1960s, and their departure left the quarry vacant. ![]() In 2018, Fishers purchased 70 acres along the northeast area of the reservoir from Irving Materials, Inc., with plans to build a waterfront park, making the largely private lake open to the public. This resulted in the formation of the Geist Watershed Alliance organization which focused on the long-term improvement and protection of Geist Reservoir’s water quality. During the Summer of 2007, the reservoir suffered a toxic blue‐green algal bloom. The Geist Lake Coalition was formed in 2000 with the mission of addressing and upholding the longevity of the Geist Reservoir. The ecological health of the reservoir for recreational use became problematic through the 2000s, leading to the formation of two different groups focused on protecting it. On January 2, 2010, Fishers annexed the unincorporated area of Geist after a four-year legal battle with the Geist United Opposition group. Residential development continued expanding, and by the early 2000s, there were around 2,200 up-scale homes lining the reservoir’s banks. Under the ownership of the Meritor Financial Group of Philadelphia, Shorewood continued to sell lots around Geist through the early 1990s. Shorewood finally began construction of its first two housing developments, Beamreach and Masthead, in 1980. Senator Birch Bayh refused to support it. ![]() The proposed project delayed development for almost a decade but was eventually scrapped in 1978 when U.S. It included two new dams that would double the reservoir’s size. In September of that year, Governor Edgar Whitcomb announced the state’s plan to participate in the Army Corps of Engineers’ $52-millon project to expand Geist. ![]()
